He did not simply want to manage my mother’s daily life, to control who she saw and what she spent.
That was only the fence.
What that power of attorney told me, laid next to the quiet transfers, was that he was preparing to take everything, methodically and with a paper trail he believed pointed the right way, to strip a woman of thirty years of accumulated security and leave her with nothing but his goodwill.
I am not a lawyer, and I did not yet understand the machinery of what I was looking at.
But I understood the shape of it.
