It was the calm of total restraint, of a person choosing, deliberately, not to unleash a power the men before her could not yet see.

She had been mocked, dismissed, and instructed to take her sleeping child out into the Chicago night to find a cheaper motel, by two employees standing in the lobby of a hotel that she, personally, owned.

And she absorbed all of it without a flicker, because she was learning something, watching these two men, something more valuable than the momentary satisfaction of putting them in their place would have been.

She was learning who they were.
