The Weight of a Small Thing
Chapter 14 — Not a Sacrifice
There is a way of telling my story that I need to refuse, and I am going to refuse it plainly, because I have heard people begin to tell it that way and I would rather correct the record while I still can.
The way that is wrong goes like this: that I was a saint, that I gave my husband my kidney and my house and my life, that I sacrificed everything for love and died nobly, the good wife to the last.
I hate that version.
It is a lie, and worse, it is a dangerous lie, the exact lie that nearly cost me my own life while I still had it.
I did not sacrifice myself for Gregor.
