It is a small change, in a small town.

But it is real.

And I like to think that somewhere down the road, some other quiet girl who does not deserve what is being said about her will be spared the three days in the dark that Vivienne endured, because a neighbor will pause, and remember, and say the six words this town paid so dearly to learn.

That would be the truest justice of all — not what happened to Delilah, but what happened to us: that we became, finally, a town that asks before it judges.

Vivienne paid for that lesson.

The least we can do is never forget it.
