The Whole World
“My dad came to see me that day,” Nolan said, looking back at the judge.
“He waited for me down the street from my school. Mom didn’t know. He said it was a secret visit. He bought me a giant chocolate milkshake from the drive-thru.”
I stared at him in shock. Grant had never once picked him up from school.
“I didn’t want to drink it all, but he kept telling me to hurry,” Nolan continued, his eyes welling but his voice steadying with a sudden, fierce anger.
“When we were walking, he ‘accidentally’ bumped into me really hard. The whole shake spilled all down the front of my shirt. All over the moon.”
A heavy silence fell over the courtroom. Even Carroway froze.
