It does not only use the victim’s hope.
It uses everyone’s reluctance to be the one who says no.
Chapter 5 — Transfer, Not Investment
I gathered the receipts into one stack and pushed them aside.
“Get dressed,” I said.
“We need groceries.” It was the most ordinary sentence I could find, and I reached for it on purpose, because the number on the tablet was exactly the number in my savings account and I did not want to think about that yet in front of her.
At five past eight I was lifting the last grocery bag into the trunk of the Buick — twelve years old, the dashboard cracked across the top, the kind of car you keep because the money that would replace it is doing more important work sitting still.
