The fourth of December was a Tuesday and it was about nine degrees and I came up the stairs and he was yellow.
That is the word.
Not pale.
Yellow — in the whites of his eyes first, which I saw before I saw anything else, and then across his face in a way that you do not mistake for winter light once you have seen it.
He had a piece of cardboard across his knees.
