The Witness Line
I took my hand back out and put it on my knee and I said: “No.
Nobody’s sitting there.”
He sat down heavily and put the rucksack between his feet and let out the specific noise that a man makes when he has been standing for a while.
We sat there for a bit.
Commuters going down the stairs.
A pigeon doing something stupid that I found unreasonably moving.
And then I put my hand out and said, “I’m Hannah.”
He looked surprised for about a second — genuinely surprised, in a way that told me something about the last three months of his life that I have not stopped thinking about — and then he shook it.
