The Witness Line
They do civil ceremonies in a room on the same floor.
It is not a grand room.
It is about eighteen feet square, carpeted, with a window at one end and a wooden arch against the far wall with silk flowers wired to it that have been there long enough to have gone slightly the wrong colour.
There were four of us.
Him, me, the court administrator who officiated, and a woman from the counter who came in to witness because we had nobody, and whose name I did not catch and have since worked very hard to find and have not.
He wore a blue button-down shirt that somebody at the shelter had given him that morning, and it was too big at the collar in a way that I could not stop looking at.
