The Woman at the Head of the Table
“I didn’t ruin you, you coward. You cut her epidural because you were jealous of her. You couldn’t stand that she was the better doctor. You used me as your excuse to torture her.
You’re the monster.”
Her words sliced through his last delusion. He stopped fighting and sank to the floor, clutching his head, because he knew she was right. He wasn’t a tragic victim.
He was a fraud who’d nearly killed his wife on purpose, and everything after was consequence.
The officers took them both out in handcuffs. I watched the booking reports come through on Arthur’s feed. I didn’t smile. A surgeon doesn’t smile when she excises a tumor—she just makes sure the margins are clean.
“Arthur,” I said. “Detonate the second charge.”
