Adriana Vance was thrown clear on the first roll, and she landed hard, and she got up.

She was conscious.

She had a fractured wrist and a scalp laceration and she was standing in the grass forty feet from a burning car.

She said, in the fourth interview, that she stood there for what she estimated was a minute and a half.

In that minute and a half she understood four things: that the girl in the passenger seat was not going to get out; that her own handbag, her rings, her phone and her license were in that car; that a woman had just died wearing her identity; and that eleven miles away there was a husband with a lawyer who was going to take her son.

And she turned around and walked up the embankment to the road.
