Evelyn’s mouth opened and closed.
And Maya said the thing that she would be asked about in interviews for years, and that she always insisted was not clever and not planned and came out of her entirely on its own:
“Thank you.”
Evelyn stared at her.
“Thank you for what?”
“For finally saying it out loud,” Maya said, “in a hallway, in front of five people, one of whom is a prosecutor.”
She turned around and walked to the elevator, and Harrison went with her, and neither of them said anything until they were in the car in the parking structure, at which point Maya put her forehead against the dashboard and stayed there for a while.
