The Woman in the Basement
Gwendolyn was quiet for a long moment.
“Yes,” she said.
Phoebe’s hands went tight on the table.
“He believed you for about two seconds,” Gwendolyn said. “I was watching him. It’s my whole skill, sweetheart, that’s the awful truth of me — I watch faces for a living, or I did.
And when you said it, his face went and I thought: it’s over, he’s got it.
“And then I said something. I don’t remember what. Something about how children imagine things. And I put my hand on his arm.”
