Chapter 14 — The Gala

Then Emiliano did something even I hadn’t anticipated.

He decided to bring me home — and to throw a gala.

He would host a charity event in honor of his “incapacitated wife,” unveil a foundation in my name, and, in front of clients and investors, declare himself the new director of the company.

It was his way of making the theft look like devotion, of laundering what he’d done through candlelight and sympathy.

He thought it was his coronation.
