Daniel was slow dancing with a tall brunette in a red dress, his hands resting at her waist the same way they had rested on mine at our wedding reception.

Then he kissed her — comfortably, naturally, like he had done it a hundred times. I covered my mouth. The woman turned slightly, and there they were: my diamond earrings, my bracelet — the one Daniel had given me while promising it symbolized our future.

I nearly stepped forward. Nearly screamed. Then the woman laughed softly.

“Your wife is even more obedient than you promised.”

Daniel smiled. “I told you. She’s easy to control.”

The words shattered something inside me. I backed away before they saw me, my phone already raised, taking photograph after photograph — Daniel, the woman, my jewelry, the candles, the two glasses.
