Hope you slept well. I have meetings most of today, but I’ll call later. Enjoy your massage.

Meetings. On our honeymoon. I read it three times, took a screenshot, and opened the photographs from the terrace. The first showed the dancing. The second caught her profile.

The third, the earrings. In the fourth, she stood beside the table, one hand near a black leather folder. I enlarged it. The image went grainy, but something was embossed on the folder — a gold symbol, two overlapping letters.

H and B. Hart and Bennett? My maiden name was Bennett; Daniel’s was Hart. For a moment I wondered whether the folder held wedding contracts, or some surprise he’d planned before things went wrong.

Then I remembered the words. Obedient. Control. I zoomed in again. The letters weren’t H and B. They were H and R.

Daniel ran Hart Strategic Holdings, a private investment firm that acquired struggling family businesses and reorganized them. He called it saving companies “too sentimental to survive.”
