The Moment Everything Changed

The ship did not stop for long.

It pulled close enough to the shore of a desolate island in the Gulf of St.

Lawrence — a cold, rocky, windswept scrap of land that appeared on some maps of the time with the ominous name “Isle of Demons” — and a small boat went over the side.

A woman was helped into it.

Her nurse climbed down after her.

And then, by some accounts, a young man chose to follow rather than remain aboard.

They were given supplies.

A gun.

Powder and shot.

Some food.

Seeds.

A few basic tools.

A Bible.

The small boat reached the shore.

The people in it climbed out onto the island.

The ship turned and continued westward toward the New World.

The woman left behind was Marguerite de la Rocque.
