Three People On An Island At The Edge Of The World

Marguerite was not initially alone.

Her nurse, a woman referred to in most accounts as Damienne (some sources give her name as Damienne, others as Bastienne; the uncertainty reflects the fragmentary nature of the record), was with her.

And the young man with whom she had had the affair — rather than accepting the reprieve of continuing aboard the ship — chose to go ashore with her.

In some versions of the story, he jumped or was put off the ship; in others, he chose of his own will to stay with her.
