I had assumed, in the vague way you assume things you do not want to examine, that it was about money in the abstract, some competitor or opportunist sniffing around the edges of a wealthy man’s affairs.

I had not, even for a moment, let myself connect it to the woman I was sharing my home and my life with.

Now the two facts sat side by side in my mind, the message from Seattle and the woman on the screen carrying a jewelry box into a housekeeper’s room, and they were not two facts.

They were one.

I did not yet know all the details, but I knew the essential thing, the way you know a storm is coming before you can see it: that these were connected, that the framing of Teresa and the reaching for my trust documents were parts of a single design, and that I had come home three days early and walked into the middle of it purely by accident.
