I held up my phone so that Vanessa could see the screen, a screenshot of a message she had sent to her brother, her own words captured and preserved.

“Do you recognize this?” I asked her.

She refused to look at it, turning her face away like a child.

“I have no idea where you got that,” she said.

So I read it to her, and to the room.

It was not a long message, but it was complete, the way a confession is complete.

In it she described me to her brother as a man who hated confrontation, who could be steered rather than fought.

She laid out a sequence: get the prenuptial terms softened before the wedding, then persuade me to update the trust beneficiaries soon after, and within a couple of years the thing would be done and they would be, in her word, cleared.
