Judge Leonard spent several quiet minutes with the documents before he spoke. Toby held my hand under the table, his fingers warm against mine.
“This court does not measure parental fitness by clothing labels, square footage, or the cut of a suit,” he began, looking at Russell. “Financial resources are relevant.
They do not excuse manipulation or emotional neglect.”
He turned toward me. “Mrs. Davenport works extremely hard under difficult conditions. The evidence shows her recent financial trouble was caused directly by delayed child support.”
Benedict stopped taking notes and sat back.
“The child is healthy, thriving in school, closely attached to his mother, and secure in her home.” The judge lifted the photograph of the navy moon shirt.
