Over the years, visitors would stop and ask about it. Toby always glanced at me first, gave me a small smile, and told them the same thing.
“That was the day everyone found out a shirt can tell two completely different stories.”
He was right. Russell’s expensive lawyer had looked at that shirt and seen worn fabric, a soft collar, and a stain that wouldn’t wash out. My son had looked at it and seen his mother coming home late in the rain with a thin paper bag holding twelve dollars’ worth of hope.
They had come to court to show what I couldn’t buy. What they proved instead was everything my son had already been given.
