Part 2 — What Happened After He Left

Russell had walked out two years earlier. He packed his clothes, his good coffee maker, the bedroom television, and everything else he considered worth having, then moved into a bright townhouse across the city.

“We’re adults, Brenda,” he’d said while zipping his bags. “There’s no reason to drag lawyers into this.”

Within three months he’d stopped answering most of my calls.

My mother, Martha, moved into our small apartment soon after. She showed up at the door with one suitcase, a slow cooker, and enough quiet strength to carry the whole household through what was coming.

She never asked whether I wanted help. She walked in and took over.

“You can sit down and cry later,” she told me that first night. “Right now your boy needs a hot dinner and you need sleep.”
