The lakes that had formed during the glacial maximum — Lake Bonneville to the south, smaller pluvial lakes throughout the Great Basin — were still large, though shrinking.
The specific gravel deposits in which the burial was found are Bonneville flood gravel — the material deposited when Lake Bonneville catastrophically overflowed through Red Rock Pass in southern Idaho around 17,400 years ago.
The flood was one of the largest flood events in the geological record of North America, sending an enormous wave of water racing down the Snake River canyon, carving and reshaping the landscape.
