There Would Be Food Tomorrow
But I walked into it, and stayed in it for five years, because staying was easier than the flight I did not take.
That is mine.
It will always be mine.
And every full basket on my daughter’s counter is, among other things, my daily penance for the five years of flights I did not take.
Chapter 10 — For Tomorrow
That evening, I took her to a restaurant, a real one, and the first thing my daughter did when she sat down was check the prices on the menu, her eyes going straight to the numbers before the food.
And halfway through her meal, I watched her begin, quietly, to wrap part of her chicken breast in a napkin.
