“That’s what matters.” I have never fully agreed with her about that, and I never will; I think the years I missed matter, terribly, and I do not want the grace of my daughter’s forgiveness to let me off the hook for them.

But I have come to understand what she meant, and to receive it.

She did not mean that the missed years did not matter.

She meant that they were not the end of the story.

She meant that a father who comes back, even late, even shamefully late, is a different thing from a father who never comes at all, and that she had decided to build her life around the coming-back rather than the leaving.

It was a choice she made, a generosity she extended, and the least I could do was honor it by being, from that day forward, a father who never left again.
