The entire machinery of the cover-up existed to protect that view from the street.

And now, in the space of one rainy night, the street was seeing the truth: the handcuffs, the cruisers, the detective, the daughter-in-law walking out with her coat over her arm.

I will not pretend I felt nothing watching it.

Some small, tired, human part of me felt the grim satisfaction of a woman who had been called a liar for two years watching the liars’ own house light up with the neighbors’ dawning understanding.

But mostly what I felt was something quieter and more important than satisfaction, and it took me a while to name it.
