That morning, the Detroit skyline was washed in bruised gray after a night of torrential autumn rain, and my sedan glided to a halt outside a downtown office tower with fifteen minutes to spare before I was due to chair the executive board.

In a tailored cream pantsuit, my hair in a severe chignon, I looked like any ordinary professional among the morning crowd.
