An old brass key, heavy for its size, gone dark with tarnish, with an ornate worked bow at the top of it — the kind of key that belongs to no modern lock, that speaks of vaults and strongboxes and another age entirely.

I had never seen anything like it in that house.

It did not belong to any door I knew.
