And by the time I understood the shape of what had happened, years had gone by, and Fiona had become my whole daily world, and I could not have handed her back to them if I had wanted to — and I did not want to.

So perhaps it does not matter that I agreed to something I did not understand.

Perhaps the not-understanding was its own kind of grace.
