Most of them have nothing to leave anyone.

That is rather the point.

There is no pillow with a secret sewn inside, no forty acres, no verdict waiting to be delivered — there is only an old human being at the end of a long life, wanting, as we all will want when our time comes, simply not to be alone for the last of it.

Fiona taught me that this wanting is sacred, and that meeting it is the truest work there is, and that it does not require you to be family, or to be paid, or to be thanked, or even to be remembered.

It requires only that you show up, and stay, when no one is making you.
