I did not reach again.
I only lay still and listened to her breathing refuse to slow, and I understood that whatever had happened in this house while I was gone, my hands were not going to fix it by grabbing.
This is the thing civilians misunderstand about a soldier’s discipline.
They think it’s the ability to act under fire — to move toward danger when your body screams to run.
And it is that.
But the harder discipline, the one that takes years and costs more, is the ability to not act.
