Over the following days my phone buzzed endlessly.

Priscilla sent long messages claiming I had destroyed her life and ruined her marriage.

My father left voicemails calling me ungrateful, cold, and arrogant, accusing me of treating my own family like military subordinates.

My mother begged me to come home so we could pretend Thanksgiving morning had never happened.

I eventually sent one standardized reply to all of them: that I would discuss property matters only in writing, that I would not discuss my military duties under any circumstances, and that I needed peace to grieve my husband and protect my child.

And as the days passed, their version of events began, predictably, to shift.
