What I do know is that the family I am rebuilding, whatever its final size, is being built on a foundation the old one never had, and that foundation is consent.

Every person I let back into my life now enters through a door I control, on terms I have named, asked-and-answered, one question at a time.

My mother may visit — because she asked, and accepted the rules, and honors them.

She may help with the box — because she waited at the threshold and requested permission rather than assuming it.

That is the whole of the new arrangement, and it is not cold, though my father called it cold, and my sister called it my need to be a hero.

It is the opposite of cold.
