The papers could prove the children were his.

They could not show him a single day of what being theirs would have meant.

They could not show him the early school mornings, the two a.m. fevers, the birthday cakes baked in base-housing kitchens, the questions about why the other kids had a grandfather and they did not, the ten thousand ordinary unglamorous hours of simply being there that add up, over a decade, to a family.
