It was a tender one, and a sad one, and it belonged entirely to us — to me and the five children I had carried through ten years to bring to this grave — and it had nothing to do with Garrett or Felicia or the crowd or the documents at all.

That was the whole point.

I had not driven to Ohio to win.

I had driven to Ohio so that my children could stand, once, in the presence of the one person in that family who would have been proud of them, and so that I could tell an old man, too late, that his one kind card had helped hold a frightened young woman together across the hardest decade of her life.

The bells had stopped.
