Diane began, softly, to cry.

“Please, Sabrina,” she wept, “don’t destroy this family.”

“This family,” I said, “was destroyed the moment one of you turned the lock on that door.

I didn’t destroy anything.

I just stopped being the only one who couldn’t see it.”

And it was at that exact moment — as though the house itself had decided the performance was over — that a small electronic sound came from the wall outlet across the room.

It was the hidden camera, disguised as a charger, and the sound was it establishing a live connection to a server far outside that house.
