The door opened, and Detective Logan Pierce came in with two federal agents, and Charles Mercer did not run, because men like Charles never believe, until the cuffs are actually on their wrists, that the rules apply to them.

“Charles Mercer,” Logan said.

“We have a great deal to talk about.” Charles turned to me, and the warmth was entirely gone now, and what was underneath it was so cold and so old that I understood, for the first time, exactly how he had done it for twenty years.

“You destroyed me,” he said.
