I have thought since about the fact that I said it on my knees.

It wasn’t a decision; my legs just did it.

But it turned out to be the truest posture for the thing I was promising, because I wasn’t rescuing them from above, the big strong man saving the helpless children.

I was getting down to where they were, into the same grief I’d lived in, meeting them on the floor of it.

That’s the only place you can actually reach a child who’s been broken this way — not by reaching down, but by climbing all the way in to where they are and letting them see you’re already there.
