“The director hasn’t ruled yet,” the clerk said.

“But the sponsor is claiming a serious rules violation.”

“We followed every single rule in the book,” Claire said.

“My coach made sure of it.”

The clerk picked up his tray of blue plastic badges and backed away from the counter.

“They’re pulling your coach into the main office at noon to give him the decision.”

The clerk turned his back and walked through the glass door, letting it click shut behind him.

Claire stood alone in the empty registration hall.
