Thirty-Nine Million Dollars and a Brown Folder on the Kitchen Table
“She claimed she took this money from Arthur to pay the county.”
I opened my second binder.
I flipped past feed invoices, diesel receipts, and vet bills for the cattle I no longer owned.
I found the thick plastic sleeve labeled property taxes.

A carbon copy of a check was stapled to it.
I laid the green receipt on the desk right next to the image of Arthur’s check.
The green receipt showed the property taxes paid in full.
