“You’re married to Julian Rhodes?” I shifted Emma on my hip, and I looked into the eyes of the man who had once told me, on the worst night of my life, that I would be nothing without him.

“Yes,” I said.

And for the first time that whole evening, Marcus Mercer stopped smiling.

Chapter 7 — You Married Well

Marcus recovered quickly.

Arrogant men usually do; they have a great deal of practice at convincing themselves that every disaster is merely a misunderstanding that will resolve in their favor.

“So,” he said, forcing a laugh back into his voice, “you married well.”

And I watched Julian’s expression cool by several degrees.
