I did not have to bring anything at all, because the documents were already filed, and the report was already obligated, and the machinery was already turning, quietly, without any need for a performance from me.
He had theatrics.
I had a paper trail.
Only one of those things has ever actually changed anyone’s life.
I have come to think that the contrast between Marcus’s theatrics and my documentation is really a contrast between two entire theories of power, and that most people, to their cost, believe in the wrong one.
Marcus believed in the theory of the grand gesture, the theory that power is a performance, that you win by being the most confident, the most cutting, the most dominant presence in the room, that the person who delivers the best line and holds the most commanding posture is the person who prevails.
It is a seductive theory, and a common one, and it is why so many people spend so much energy on the appearance of strength, on the perfect comeback, on the dramatic confrontation they rehearse in the shower.
