The phone didn’t hold the completed report. It held one voice message, recorded fourteen minutes before the crash.
Richard pressed play, and a strained voice filled the room.
“Mr. Bennett — if anything happens to me, the signatures on Emily Carter’s bank account were traced from old legal documents. They were copied, not written by her.
A bank executive helped open the account. Look for Ernest Collins, the Whitmore Foundation’s chief accountant. He approved every transaction.”
A crash came through the recording. Then nothing.
Richard turned the phone over to the Connecticut State Police, along with the mansion footage, my medical records, and the blank documents Margaret had made me sign over the years.
