Three Fireflies
Richard’s mother had died when he was ten. His father had abused her for years, and everyone had known. Nobody intervened, because the Bennett family was wealthy and well connected.
Richard had found his mother unconscious after one particularly bad night and hidden under her bed until the police came. He had promised himself then, at ten years old, that if he ever saw another woman living in fear, he would not look away.
Suddenly it made sense. He wasn’t trying to rescue me. He was keeping a promise he’d made to himself as a child.
Little by little, the girls started to change. Olivia stopped hiding food in her backpack. Grace sang again while she drew. Lily discovered Richard’s grand piano and laughed every time she managed a single note, and Richard sat beside her teaching her simple melodies one finger at a time.
We were legally married and slept in separate rooms. He knocked before entering. He never hugged the girls without asking first. He never made a decision about them without talking to me.
That quiet respect healed things I hadn’t known were still bleeding.
