Margaret was convicted on multiple felony counts and permanently removed from the foundation.
She never apologized. At sentencing she turned and glared at me.
“You destroyed this family.”
I met her eyes. “No. You confused family with ownership. My daughters weren’t born to preserve your last name. They were born to live free of it.”
When it was all finished, Richard set divorce papers on the dining room table.
“They’re already signed. You’re safe now. You don’t owe me anything.”
