Three Minutes Before the Ceremony

January. Two stomachaches in one week, both on Saturday mornings, both resolving completely by eleven o’clock.
I took her to the pediatrician, who found nothing and asked, in passing, whether there was anything going on at home, and I said we were planning a wedding, and the pediatrician said “ah” and wrote something down and I did not ask what.
February. Hannah asked me whether she would still be able to come on the trip to Utah.
It was our trip; we had done it every year since Rebecca died.
I said of course, why on earth would you ask, and she said no reason.
