“He told me the money covered Lucas’s freight debts.”

“Lucas owed no freight debts,” Samantha said.

“Lucas didn’t owe anybody anything.”

She clicked the pen again and set it down flat.

Then she told me about the trust.

Lucas had drawn it up two years ago, she said, and filed it with a small firm in Rochester so it wouldn’t show up in any of Baldwin Logistics’s regular legal accounts.
