A year after Brenda’s phone call, Toby and Gavin helped organize the workshop’s first open-house afternoon.

Parents came with children, mechanics volunteered at repair stations, and Denise arranged a table of sandwiches and lemonade.

There were no heroic speeches.

Walter refused to stand in front of the crowd, so Keisha thanked the volunteers as a group and pointed visitors toward the repair stations.

A local reporter asked Toby how the project had begun.

He looked at me before answering.

“We made some good choices and some dangerous ones,” he said.
