Toby & Gavin — The Missing Weekends
Toby had withdrawn most of the cash from his savings jar over the summer.
I had assumed he was buying games or snacks.
At home, I found receipts in a drawer: a bicycle shop, a hardware store, and the clearance shelf at an outdoor supply place.
Some receipts listed brake cables and reflective tape.
Others listed cheap bottled water, peanut butter, and granola bars.
When I asked, Toby confessed that he and Gavin had occasionally bought food for Walter as well as for the families visiting the repair stand.
They had kept every receipt because they wanted to show the total to a community foundation someday.
